Guatemala Fishing Report Jan 10th 2011

You would think that if the spring were eternal, it would have already arrived – but the weather (as in the USA for the last month or so) can be extremely fickle. Over the Xmas period, there was a continuing pattern of low pressure that caused some turmoil for the fishing in Guatemala. The fish would be concentrated one day, but the following day could be scattered over 20 miles – so the fleet could spend a lot of time fishing water that looked great but contained few billfish.

It is in times like this that another significant benefit of 100% catch&release fishing is apparent – easy and clear cooperation between the Captains and teamwork between the boats to find good concentrations of bait and consistent action with the sailfish.

There have still been days recently when the boats have only been raising single digit sailfish in a day, but in the last few days this has really improved significantly. Our boats have been raising as many as 35 sailfish per day in the early part of the week – as well as decent numbers of Blue Marlin which have continued to maintain a strong showing all the way through the early season.

The weather patterns seem to have settle now, as most days are clear with calm seas………so perhaps the Eternal Spring can now be said to have arrived for the season. You can get a closer view of the current sea temperatures that we are fishing in Guatemala by clicking here (or the image to the right)

While taking a break from digging out the snow this week, I heard on the news that 49 of the 50 states now have at least some (snow) precipitation on the ground. I am pleased to report however that there is currently no snow in Guatemala, the temperature this morning in the marina at 7am was 81deg. F and no snow is forecast.

If you are either thinking of making a fishing trip this season, or are just tired of the cold and feel like some warm sunshine – pick up the phone (877 763 0851) and let’s plan a trip to the Sailfishing Capital of the World !!

We still have one slot left for our shared (economical !) fishing trip in March – if inetersted, please send me an email at kevin@Greatsailfishing.com. Full information can be found here :

Merry Christmas from Banana Bank Staff !!!

Banana Bank Lodge

wishes you a very

Merry Christmas 2010 !!!

Chrismas Message
Swaddling clothes

A word crosses my mind

as Christmas draws nigh.
We all hear it, and yet,
its significance is passed by

It is a word not used in common conversation,
but the term is never omitted no matter the interpretation.

Of the most beautiful story told on this Christmas day  The story of the birth of a marvelous baby boy.
The Bible tells us
"This shall be a sign…

a child wrapped in swaddling clothes and in a manger he lies".

Swaddling is the word I speak to you of.
Its meaning is that of embracement, protection and well, caring love.
As I searched for a Christmas message to behold, this is the prayer I wish to have told.
Swaddle us Oh Lord in your most comforting way
Keep us on the righteous path and protect us from falling astray.

In an effort to promote papaya production for export for small
scale farmers in the Orange Walk District, ROC –Mission
Taiwan, La Immaculada Credit Union Small Scale Enterprise
in Agriculture and Tourism and the Ministry of Agriculture
& Fisheries, are investing in the establishment of a five acre
papaya demonstration pilot project. This initiative will
provide the opportunity for other farmers throughout the
district to actively participate in the training sessions and

serve as a pilot model for technology transfer (know –how) to
the farming community in the district.
The objectives of the project are:
· To create an investment opportunity in papaya production
for export among small farmers.
· To generate and adopt standard production procedures
for further training of small farmers.
· To further develop the papaya industry in order to
increase foreign exchange generation.
The expected outputs of the project are:
· One five acre plot complete with drip irrigation system.
· One seedling nursery ( size 20 ft x 40ft).
· 500,000 lbs exportable Tainong papaya for the US
market.
· 50 farmers highly trained in Tainong production.
· Fields days to demonstrate papaya production to rural
farmers.
· The possibility of accessing further financing from ICDFTaiwan
and other funding agencies for the establishment
of an additional 30 acres of papayas.
During the project implementation, the Agriculture
Department- Orange Walk- will be supervising the project
implementation in collaboration with Taiwan Mission and

Last Minute Opportunity to spend Xmas in the SUN – and GreatFishing in Guatemala too !!

Private Beachfront Villa

All-Inclusive : Meals, Fishing, Drinks

Up to 6 Anglers – 6 nights, 4 days fishing – $13k TOTAL……..

Save over $2k!!

We always have very limited availability over Xmas – but unfortunately (for us!) have just had a cancellation for the prime week over Xmas in one of our brand new beachfront villas.

If you are tired of the cold weather already – or have been looking for a family getaway this year, this is a fabulous opportunity. The villas are 4 b/room, 4 bath and sleep up to 8 people.

We may serve your Xmas dinner to you on the outside deck looking over the Pacific Ocean. After dinner perhaps a swim at the pool or a drink at the swim-up bar ?

Either way it will be a lot different to shovelling snow and the hectic seasonal pace.

Get the shopping done – then let us worry about the logistics of dinner, food and drink – just sit back and enjoy the company !

The package is an all-inclusive for up to 6 people, staying in the private beach villa 5 nights (final night is in the I/Continental Hotel Guatemala City) and fishing for 4 days offshore in a 35 ft Bertram.

The fishing in Guatemala in    December is typically very strong – and the weather is great with warm days and calm seas.

We only have ONE of these packages available, so it is on a first come, first served basis.

If you are interested, please give us a call asap ……….otherwise the opportunity will be gone.
