A few things to remember when RVing or driving in Belize. First is sticker shock at the gas pump. The Belize dollar is about two to one U.S. dollar. The price of gas is a little higher than U.S. gas, but with the exchange a pump price of $50.00 is about $25.00U.S. Gas stations are readily available in towns and usually will accept either Belize or U.S. currency. Inbetween towns and out in the smaller villages gas might be a little more difficult to find.
The main tourist season in Belize is between Dec. and May. That happens to also be the time for sugarcane harvesting in the northern part of the country. Especially between Orange Walk and Corozal. Watch out for large slow moving trucks and tractors. The locals are trying to make their living and feel they have the right of way. When these loads move towards the sugar factory outside of Orange Walk they occasionally loose part of it. This leaves clumps of sugarcane in the roadway. If you hit them at a high speed it can cause problems. Slow down especially at night. Children use the highway as a playground both in the day and at night. Please drive carefully and do not turn your holiday into a tragedy.
Also at night sometimes locals have a habit of sleeping along side the roadway. Most villages along the main highways use sleeping policemen(speed bumps) as a means to slow traffic while passing in their village.
